Hemel Hempstead (/ ˌ h ɛ m əl ˈ h ɛ m p s t ɪ d /) is a town in the Dacorum district in Hertfordshire, England. It is 24 miles (39 km) northwest of London. The population at the 2021 census was 95,961. Hemel Hempstead has existed since at least the 8th century and was granted its town charter by Henry VIII in 1539.

Hemel Hempstead is a town in England. It is 25 miles north-west of London. The town is off the M1 motorway, 20 minutes drive from Luton Airport and 40 minutes from London itself.
After the Second World War, in 1946, the government designated Hemel Hempstead as the site of one of its proposed new towns to house the population displaced by the London Blitz, since slums and bomb sites were being cleared in London.
