Sir Henry Abel Smith (1900-1993), army officer and governor, was born on 8 March 1900 at Westminster, London, third of four children of Francis Abel Smith, banker, and his wife Madeline St Maur, née Seymour. He was tutored privately at home and, though a member of one of England’s oldest private-banking families, chose an army career.

After a distinguished career as a soldier, in which he rose to the rank of colonel in the corps of household cavalry, Sir Henry Abel Smith came to Queensland as its Governor in 1958.
