The eldest surviving son of William and Frances he was Marquis of Tichfield, Viscount Woodstock, Baron Cirencester and in 1716 Duke of Portland. He commanded a troop of Life Guards, was a Member of Parliament and Governor of Jamaica 1721-1726.

  4. In 1716 Henry was created 1st Duke of Portland and Marquess of Titchfield, largely in memory of his illustrious father. Having inherited vast estates, he should have been extremely prosperous, but suffered heavy losses when the South Sea Bubble burst in 1720.
