Henry Campbell was born in 1836 at Kelvinside, near Glasgow, although he spoke with a Perthshire accent. A genial and popular politician, Campbell-Bannerman none the less acquired a reputation, which still clings to him, as uninspired and unlikely to reach the top in politics. In fact he proved to be much more shrewd and determined than his apparently more talented rivals in both parties.
