The second Earl was succeeded by his second (but eldest surviving) son, Henry, 3rd Earl Grey. The third Earl was also a Whig politician and served under Lord John Russell as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from 1846 to 1852.
Henry Grey, 3rd Earl of Stamford was born on 10th June 1685 at Enville, staffordshire. He was the son of Honrable John Grey and his wife Honrable Catherine Ward . He married Dorothy Wright, daughter of Sir Nathan Wright, on 6th July 1704. He died on 16th November 1739 aged 54.

The eldest son and heir of Charles, 2nd Earl Grey (Prime Minister 1830-1834), he followed his father into politics in 1826, when he was elected M.P. for Winchelsea in the Whig interest.
