20 de dic. de 2023 · The monument was designed by architect Sir Herbert Baker and unveiled in 1912 by the Duke of Connaught, a member of the British royal family. The memorial itself is an impressive structure that features a statue of Rhodes seated on a horse, along with a marble colonnade and a surrounding amphitheatre.
The Union Buildings were completed in 1913, after which Herbert Baker left for New Delhi from where he returned home to England. In 1897, Cecil John Rhodes started large scale fruit farming in the Drakenstein Valley and commissioned Sir Herbert Baker to design his country retreat on the farm Nieuwedorp at Boschendal.
