Childhood & Early Life. Herbert was born Herbert Brough Falcon Marshall, on May 23, 1890, in London, to actor couple Percy F Marshall and Ethel May Turner. He was nicknamed "Bart" by his mother. After graduating from 'St. Mary's College' in Essex, Herbert took up an accounting job but was fired for his inefficiency.
Born in London in 1890, Marshall was the son of a well-known British stage actor. As a young man he attended St. Mary's College in Harlow, England. At the age of 20, a stage manager friend of his father hired him as an assistant. Hollywood legend has it that in 1911, an actor became ill and Marshall was pressed into service for a walk-on role.
