Hertford College was established in the 1280s as Hart Hall and became a college in 1740 (although it was dissolved in 1816 and revived in 1874). The first Hertford College began life as Hart Hall or Aula Cervina , a small tenement bought by Elias de Hertford from Walter de Grendon.
Hertford College Boat Club is one of the best in Oxford, with both its men’s and women’s first boats in the first division for the main annual races, Torpids and Eights Week. In August 2013 Hertford College Rugby Club became the first team from the UK to tour Mongolia in official partnership with the Mongolian Rugby Football Union.

Living at Hertford. We’re well-known for being a friendly college and everyone here will do their best to help you feel at home. Even before you arrive, you’ll receive a letter from your college ‘mum’ or ‘dad’, as all visiting students are included in the college ‘family’ system – which is similar to the ‘buddy’ systems in many US universities.
Over the next 40 years Jackson designed the Gatehouse, Hall and Chapel for Hertford, as well as the new north quad across the road. In 1913, he built the Bridge of Sighs, linking the old and new quads across New College Lane. The bridge became an important symbol of Hertford’s growing presence in the university.
