The Castle of Otranto, novel by Horace Walpole, published under a pseudonym in 1764 (though first editions bear the next year’s date).It is considered the first Gothic novel in the English language, and it is often said to have founded the horror story as a legitimate literary form.

He is now largely remembered for Strawberry Hill, the home he built in Twickenham, south-west London where he revived the Gothic style some decades before his Victorian successors, and for his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto .

The novel was inspired by a nightmare Walpole had at Strawberry Hill House (18th-century engraving of the gothic villa pictured). The Castle of Otranto was written in 1764 during Horace Walpole's tenure as MP for King's Lynn. Walpole was fascinated with medieval history, in 1749 building a fake gothic castle, Strawberry Hill House.

Horatio Walpole, 4. hrabě z Orfordu známý jako Horace Walpole (24. září 1717 Londýn – 2. dubna 1797 tamtéž) byl anglický politik, architekt a preromantický spisovatel. Je považován za zakladatele žánru gotického románu a je znám také jako autor mnoha čtivých dopisů, nabízejících živý obraz intelektuální aristokracie jeho doby.
