While admiring Somerset’s personal qualities and motives, scholars have generally blamed his lack of political acumen for the failure of his policies.

The foundation of Somerset's career was that he was elder brother of Jane Seymour [1], Henry VIII's third wife, and therefore uncle to Edward VI. His father had been a gentleman of good family at Wolf Hall in Wiltshire.
