He was educated at Eton and Cambridge and eventually ordained an Anglican priest. However in January 1830, he was received into the Catholic Church and after a course of studies in Rome, was ordained in 1832 and returned to work in England.

Educated at Eton and Cambridge, he took orders in the Church of England but increasing doubts led him to become a Catholic. He was ordained priest in 1832.
