Ilon Wikland is one of Sweden’s most popular children’s book illustrators. Wikland is the one who illustrated most of Astrid Lindgren’s beloved books and characters, such as The Brothers Lionheart, Lotta on Troublemaker Street, and Madicken.
Ilon Wikland is a versatile artist whose pictures span a wide range, from the safe idyll on Troublemaker Street to the breathtaking black depths at the Karma Falls in The Brothers Lionheart. Wikland came as a refugee to Sweden from Estonia during the Second World War and was later trained at the art school Konstfack in Stockholm.
Maire-Ilon Wikland (née Pääbo; born 5 February 1930) is an Estonian-born Swedish artist and illustrator. Wikland was born in Tartu, Estonia and raised in Haapsalu, Lääne County on Estonia's Baltic coast.

Ilon Wikland is perhaps best known for having illustrated most of Astrid Lindgren’s beloved characters. However, she has also written and illustrated several of her own books and worked with other authors such as Mark Levengood, Barbro Lindgren and Edith Unnerstad.
Ilon Wikland’s visual world contains magnificent castles as well as colourful wooden houses, deep forests and winding paved roads. Several motifs derive from Wikland’s Estonian background and call to mind the picturesque coastal town of Haapsalu and views of Tallinn, where she grew up.

Ilon Wikland is a Swedish artist who has illustrated the largest number of Astrid Lindgren’s books. In 1944, Wiklund escaped the second Soviet occupation of Estonia with a classmate’s family and arrived in Sweden as a refugee.
