"International Lover" is one of the earliest examples of Prince performing a song for a lover who is the subject of the song. The song's lyrics are seductive and considered to be metaphorical with sex being compared to air travel and Prince serving as the captain.

International Lover is the eleventh and final track on Prince’s fifth album 1999, and in 1983 it was included as a b-side on some versions of the single Little Red Corvette, the album’s second single. A brief solo piano rehearsal of the track was released on the 2018 posthumous album Piano & A Microphone 1983.
