She was initially self-taught on piano, but had a few years of classical training while at school. She was interested in jazz from the beginning, and also taught herself to play drums as a teenager.

Irene Schweizer was particularly interested in music because of the dance bands she heard at her father’s restaurant, and the chance to play with the instruments left behind. She began playing the piano in early jazz styles at the age of 12 and, at 14, started playing the drums.
