Both his parents came from the German merchant class, and their families used immigration to expand their business enterprises and networks across the Atlantic, though with very different results.

Han blev kaldt "The Boy Wonder" for sin ungdom og ekstraordinære evner til at vælge de rigtige manuskripter, skuespillere, samle den bedste produktionsstab og skabe stor profit på sine film.

The award is named for Irving Thalberg, head of the Production Division of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who developed the company's reputation for sophisticated films.
