1 de may. de 2024 · Isaac Butt was a lawyer and Irish nationalist leader who, if not the originator of the term Home Rule, was the first to make it an effective political slogan. He was the founder (1870) and first chief of the Home Government Association and president (1873–77) of the Home Rule Confederation of Great.
8 de may. de 2024 · Home rule as a movement and a popular political catchcry began with the Home Rule League, which was founded in 1873 by Isaac Butt. Conservative in origin, it was dedicated to land reform and offering a constitutional counterweight to Fenianism (Bull, Citation 2009).
Hace 3 días · Isaac Butt though was an unlikely choice to lead such a Movement but he did have some degree of pedigree in Nationalist politics. He was born on September 6th, 1813 at Glenfin, Co Donegal, the son of a Protestant clergyman.

In essence 'Home Rule', proposed that Ireland should have its own parliament for domestic matters whilst remaining an integral part of the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland.

In 1870, Isaac Butt, who was a Protestant, formed the Home Government Association, which became the Home Rule League. Charles Stewart Parnell, also a Protestant, became leader in 1880, and the organisation became the Irish National League in 1882.
