20 de feb. de 2024 · Isaac Butt was a lawyer and Irish nationalist leader who, if not the originator of the term Home Rule, was the first to make it an effective political slogan. He was the founder (1870) and first chief of the Home Government Association and president (1873–77) of the Home Rule Confederation of Great.

Isaac Butt, the man responsible for calling the meeting, was the final speaker of the evening and was perhaps the most influential man in attendance. A large, barrel-chested man with a shock of white hair, thick lips, unfashionably clean-shaven and a bit dishevelled in appearance, Butt appeared older than his 56 years.
This chapter examines the contribution of Isaac Butt in the agitation for Irish self-government in 1870. Butt proposed not only the dismantling of the United Kingdom but its federalisation, with England, Scotland, and Ireland having local parliaments subordinate to Westminster.
