The son of Gilbert Fitz Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Pembroke, was Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (died 1176), known as Strongbow, a leader of the Norman invasion of Ireland. His only son died while still a minor, and Strongbow's many Irish and Welsh possessions passed with his daughter Isabel, to her husband, William Marshal. [10]

Isabel de Clare, suo jure Countess of Pembroke and Striguil (1172 – 1220), was a Cambro-Norman-Irish noblewoman and one of the wealthiest heiresses in Wales and Ireland.[1] She was the wife of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, who served four successive kings as Lord Marshal of England.
When Isabel Marshal was born on 9 October 1200, in Pembroke Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales, United Kingdom, her father, William Marshall 1st Earl of Pembroke, was 55 and her mother, Isabel de Clare, was 28. She married Gilbert de Clare 4th Earl of Hertford on 9 October 1217, in Tewkesbury Abbey, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England.
Isabel died in October 1239, and her grandson Gilbert "The Red" inherited her lands as well as the de Clare lands on the death of his father, Richard, in 1262. S ibilla (d ante 1238) married, before 1219, William de Ferrers, earl of Derby, and they had seven daughters.
