Prince Philipp of Hesse became a particularly close friend of Hermann Göring, the future head of the Luftwaffe.

As a result of the Dresden Coinage Convention, the exchange rate of these coins was pegged to the North German thaler. The grand duchy of Hesse also minted double thaler coins from 1839 and Vereinsthaler from 1857.

Left no descendants, and the Margraviates passed to sons of the Elector John George.

The four-course dinner took place in the great dining-hall and existed among others of lobster on cucumber-carpaccio, fillet beef from Angus with morels, asparagus pie and potato-gratin.
