Maxine Sullivan (May 13, 1911 – April 7, 1987), [1] born Marietta Williams in Homestead, Pennsylvania, United States, [2] was an American jazz vocalist and performer. As a vocalist, Sullivan was active for half a century, from the mid-1930s to just before her death in 1987.
As with a Sarah Vaughan album I reviewed earlier this year, the jazziness in a singer’s voice is best brought out by accompaniments from a small group of jazz musicians. So the best tracks are mainly those that Maxine recorded with her husband, bassist John Kirby, and his sextet fronted by Charlie Shavers, Russell Procope and Buster Bailey.
