is a documentary about J.R.R. Tolkien, released in 1996, the centenary of his birth.
Directed by Derek Bailey and narrated by actress Judi Dench, it covers J.R.R. Tolkien's life and inspirations for and development of The Lord of the Rings and the greater Middle-earth legendarium. Three of his children, Christopher, John, and Priscilla, are interviewed, as are the eminent Tolkien scholars Verlyn Flieger and Tom Shippey and Tolkien's publisher, Rayner Unwin. Recordings of Tolkien himself are included, reading Elvish words, writing in Tengwar, and remarking on the theme of death in literature.
