Stanley Kubrick s-a născut la 26 iulie 1928 la spitalul Lying-In din Manhattan, fiind primul din cei doi copii ai lui Jacques Leonard Kubrick și soția acestuia Gertrude, născută Perveler. Sora sa, Barbara, s-a născut în 1934. Jacques Kubrick, ai cărui părinți erau evrei austro-ungari, era doctor.
