James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton: As a leading figure in the Scottish nobility and part of the group opposed to Mary, Morton played a crucial role in the events following the murder of Lord Darnley. He was one of the key figures in the custody of the casket containing the letters after it was supposedly discovered.

James was to be brought up a Protestant and the government was to be run by a series of regents, beginning with Moray, until James began to assert his independence in 1581.
