4 de sept. de 2023 · General Sir James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton (19 June 1606 – 9 March 1649) was a Scottish nobleman and influential Civil war military leader. The son of James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton, and of the Lady Ann Cunningham, daughter of James Cunningham, 7th Earl of Glencairn, was born on 19 June 1606 at Hamilton Palace, Lanarkshire.

Ende 1868 wurde er zum Duke of Abercorn erhoben. Der Titel gehört zur Peerage of Ireland. Von 1874 bis 1876 war Hamilton erneut Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
James Hamilton was Groom of the Stole to Prince Albert, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and in 1878 he was Envoy Extraordinary to invest the King of Italy with the Order of the Garter. He was also a patron of the artist Edwin Landseer and lent Ardverikie, his house in the Scottish Highlands, to Queen Victoria in 1847.
