Lee’s family on the Arlington Estate in the mid-1800s, James Parks is the only civilian buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Although he never donned a military uniform, he dug many of the first graves at Arlington and cared for the nation’s cemetery for more than 60 years.
