James Stirling nació el 22 de abril de 1926 en Glasgow, pero desde 1927 vivió en Liverpool. Cursó estudios en una escuela local y algún tiempo después en la Universidad de Liverpool. Pasó tres años trabajando en el estudio de Lyons , Israel y Ellis , tras lo que fundó en 1956 su propia compañía junto a James Gowan.
