Jane Morris was born Jane Burden to an Oxford stableman and an illiterate servant. One night she attended a play in Oxford at the Drury Lane Theatre Company with her sister Bessie and was singled out by artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones, who asked her to model for their commission at the Oxford Union.
Jane Morris was a skillful embroiderer but this is one of very few surviving pieces that can be definitively attributed to her hand. She worked it with her elder daughter, Jenny, basing the design on an original 1876 design by William Morris. The design was sold through the Royal School of Art Needlework in London in the late 1870s.
Life of Jane Morris. Jane Burden was born in Oxford on 19 October 1839. Her father was Robert Burden, a stableman and his wife, Ann Maizey was a laundress. Her mother was illiterate and perhaps came to Oxford as a domestic servant. Not much is known about Jane’s childhood, but it is believed to be poor and deprived.
