Spencer Perceval KC (1 November 1762 – 11 May 1812) was a British statesman and barrister who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from October 1809 until his assassination in May 1812. He is the only British prime minister to have been assassinated, and the only solicitor-general or attorney-general to have become prime minister.

Howard Marsh married Jane Perceval, daughter of Spencer Perceval, and the grand daughter of an assassinated British prime minister, in 1870. [8] In 1903 Marsh was appointed Professor of Surgery at Cambridge University [1] in belated succession to Sir George Murray Humphry (who had died in 1896). [3]

Miss Perceval had inherited a share of the legacy voted by Parliament to the children of her grandfather Spencer Perceval, the only British prime minister ever to be assassinated.
