Knowing, somehow, that his mother would be miserable in Washington, young Benny, only 11, wrote her a touching note in which he expressed the wish that, for her sake, his father should lose the election.
Jane Pierce was a deeply religious woman, born into the Congregationalist church, and her beliefs penetrated almost every aspect of the family's life. No meal took place without grace. Before his tragic death, her son, Benjamin Pierce, was sent to church every single morning and after his death, religion seemed to be the only solace for his parents.

Jane Means (Appleton) Pierce (1806-1863) was the daughter of a New Hampshire Congregational minister and president of Bowdoin College. She married then-Congressman Franklin Pierce in 1834. She was a petite and attractive woman, but fell into depression and delicate health after the deaths of two young sons.
