Jean-Baptiste-Donatien de Vimeur de Rochambeau was born in Vendôme in central France on July 1, 1725, the third and only son to survive to adulthood of Joseph Charles de Vimeur, marquis de Rochambeau, and his wife, Marie-Claire-Thérèse Bégon.
