Jeff Nichols (born December 7, 1978) is an American filmmaker. His films are characterized by their Southern United States backdrop and ambience. He is also known for his longstanding collaboration with actor Michael Shannon, who has appeared in all of his feature films to date.

Biografía. Jeff Nichols estudió cine en la Escuela de Artes de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte. Escribió su primer guion, Shotgun Stories (2007), con el actor Michael Shannon en mente para interpretar el papel principal, y contactó al actor a través de un antiguo maestro, logró que el protagonizara su ópera prima.

- Shotgun Stories (2007) Michael Shannon,quien es el actor fetiche del director (Nichols asegura que luego de verlo en 8 mile y High crimes decidió que quería tenerlo en cada película que hiciera, y así fue), protagoniza esta intensa tragedia Shakesperana, que relata el enfrentamiento de dos conjuntos de medios hermanos luego de la muerte de su padre.
- Take Shelter (2011) Este relato apocalíptico explora todo lo que un hombre es capaz de hacer para proteger a sus seres queridos. Michael Shannon (en, quizás, su mejor trabajo) interpreta a un padre de familia que es atormentado por horrendos sueños, los cuales parecen estar queriéndole advertir un suceso poco feliz.
- MUD (2011) Nichols describe su tercer película como “una cuento de Mark Twain dirigido por Sam Peckinpah”, lo cual es totalmente cierto. Es un western (mas bien southern, porque se desarrolla en el sur de los Estados Unidos) moderno, que nos cuenta la historia de dos niños que un día conocen a un misterioso fugitivo que vive oculto en una isla ubicada en el rió Missisipi, con el que entablaran una curiosa relación y lo ayudaran a reencontrarse con un antiguo amor.
