    APPLETON, Jesse, educator, born in New Ipswich, New Hampshire, 17 November 1772; died in Brunswick, Maine, 12 November 1819. After graduation at Dartmouth College he spent two years in teaching at Dover and Amherst, then studied theology, and was ordained pastor at Hampton, New Hampshire, in February 1797, notwithstanding his Armenian tendencies, which were considered heretical at that time.
