Johannes Brahms was nog maar 20 jaar toen Schumann deze aanprijzing publiceerde in zijn Neue Zeitschrift für Musik – op de voorpagina nog wel. Datzelfde jaar was Brahms namelijk bij Robert en Clara Schumann langsgegaan met een lovende aanbevelingsbrief van de violist Joseph Joachim.

On May 20, 1896, Clara died, and soon afterward Brahms himself was compelled to seek medical treatment, in the course of which his liver was discovered to be seriously diseased. Johannes Brahms (7. toukokuuta 1833 Hampuri – 3. huhtikuuta 1897 Wien) oli saksalainen klassisen musiikin säveltäjä, joka edusti tyylillisesti romantiikkaa. Häntä pidetään yhtenä suurimmista koskaan eläneistä säveltäjistä; "kolme suurta B:tä" ovat Bach , Brahms ja Beethoven .
