22 de mar. de 2024 · Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius began telescopic observations of the Moon in 1643 with a telescope that he made. Hevelius published his observations in his 1647 book, Selenographia. The treatise includes three large, detailed lunar maps (one of which is on display in the adjacent case) and 40 engravings of the Moon in various phases.

He is Johannes Hevelius (1611–1687, see Fig. 5.5), a member of a noble family and mayor of Danzig (nowadays in Poland Gdańsk). In 1630 Hevelius went to study jurisprudence at the University of Leiden in the Dutch Republic.
