Kepler was born on 27 December 1571, in the Free Imperial City of Weil der Stadt (now part of the Stuttgart Region in the German state of Baden-Württemberg ). His grandfather, Sebald Kepler, had been Lord Mayor of the city. By the time Johannes was born, he had two brothers and one sister and the Kepler family fortune was in decline.

Johannes Kepler (1571-1628) nació en Weil der Stadt, Alemania, el 27 de diciembre de 1571. Su familia era luterana y el niño, de nacimiento prematuro, resultó hipocondríaco, de naturaleza débil, y sufrió toda su vida una salud frágil. A los tres años contrajo una viruela que le dejó secuelas, entre ellas, una vista debilitada.
