Biography. John Bowes, 10th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne was born 14 April 1769 to John Lyon, 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (1737-1776) and Mary Eleanor Bowes (1749-1800) and died 3 July 1820 of unspecified causes. He married Mary Milner (-1860) 2 July 1820 .
The Bowes-Lyon family descends from George Bowes of Gibside and Streatlam Castle (1701–1760), a County Durham landowner and politician, through John Bowes, 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, chief of the Clan Lyon. He was the third son of John Bowes, 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and Mary Bowes, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. His mother was the author of the verse drama, "The Siege of Jerusalem" (1769).
John Bowes, 10th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (14 April 1769 – 3 July 1820) was a Scottish nobleman and peer. He was the eldest son of John Bowes, 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Mary Bowes, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. His mother was the author of the verse drama, "The Siege of Jerusalem" (1769).
Thomas Bowes-Lyon, 11th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (3 May 1773 – 27 August 1846) From 1 October 1767 and until his death, he sat as a Scottish Representative peer in the House of Lords . On 7 March 1776, Lord Strathmore died of tuberculosis whilst at sea on his way to Portugal and was succeeded in turn by his sons, John and Thomas.

She was born on 24 February 1749, the only child of George Bowes MP, of Streatlam Castle and Gibside in County Durham, and his second wife, Mary, heir of Edward Gilbert, of St Paul’s Walden in Hertfordshire.
