Both John Cale (born on December 3, 1940) and Terry Riley (born on June 24, 1935) were students of avant-garde composer LaMonte Young. Cale turned to rock with the Velvet Underground, but returned to his contemporary classical background in teaming up with Riley for their sole recorded collaboration, Church of Anthrax, in 1971.

全体としてややCale色が強く、ミニマルというより変種のファンクと思います（その割にあまりリズムは一定しませんが）。 A面の二曲はそれでもいかにもTerry Rileyらしい音色が聴かれますが、B面のIdes of MarchはRileyがこんなピアノを弾くのか、と驚くような演奏です。
