Biografía. Los hermanos John y Charles Allen nacieron en Gales de un oficial naval, Thomas Hay Allen ( 1773-14 de febrero de 1852), y su esposa, Katherine, hija del clérigo y anticuario Owen Manning, quien se desempeñó como vicario de Godalming en el condado de Surrey, Inglaterra durante varios años.
