He was the elder son of the 10th Duke of Marlborough and his wife, the Hon. Alexandra Mary Hilda Cadogan. He was known as "Sunny" after his courtesy title of Earl of Sunderland .
George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough (né Spencer; 27 December 1793 – 1 July 1857), styled Earl of Sunderland until 1817 and Marquess of Blandford between 1817 and 1840, was a British nobleman, politician, and peer. The great-grandfather of Sir Winston Churchill, he served as Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire between 1842 and 1857.

Henrietta Churchill (b. 19 Jul 1681 – d. 24 Oct 1733) married Francis Godolphin, 2 nd Earl of Godolphin (b. 3 Sep 1678 – d. 17 Jan 1766), son of Sidney Godolphin, 1 st Earl of Godolphin. They had three children: William, Marquess of Blandford (b. 1700 – d. 24 Aug 1731) m. Maria Catherina de Jong, daughter of Peter de John, of Utrecht, Holland

This changed when he became first in line to succeed to the dukedom and was raised to the courtesy title Marquess of Blandford. John Spencer-Churchill was educated at Eton and then Oriel College, Oxford.
