5 de may. de 2024 · In 1846, John Couch Adams, a British mathematician and astronomer, determined the position of Neptune, using only mathematics. Around the same time, the French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier calculated the planet's location independently of Adams.

Although Johann Gottfried Galle and Heinrich Louis d’Arrest have the distinction of having been the first individuals to identify Neptune in the night sky, credit for its “discovery” was eventually credited to John Couch Adams and Urbain-Jean-Joseph Le Verrier.
Hace 2 días · Calculations by John Couch Adams and Urbain Le Verrier both predicted the general position of the planet. In 1846, Le Verrier sent his position to Johann Gottfried Galle , asking him to verify it. The same night, Galle spotted Neptune near the position Le Verrier had predicted.
