John Donne ( / dʌn / DUN) (1571 or 1572 [a] – 31 March 1631) was an English poet, scholar, soldier and secretary born into a recusant family, who later became a cleric in the Church of England. [2] . Under royal patronage, he was made Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in London (1621–1631). [1] .

Donne is often considered the greatest love poet in the English language.
The English writer and Anglican cleric John Donne is considered now to be the preeminent metaphysical poet of his time. He was born in 1572 to Roman Catholic parents, when practicing that religion was illegal in England.
