Dryden, John ( 1631–1700 ), poet, playwright, and critic, was born on 9 August 1631 at Aldwincle, Northamptonshire, the eldest of the fourteen children of Erasmus Dryden (c.1602–1654), son of Sir Erasmus Dryden (1553–1632) of Canons Ashby, and his wife, Mary (d. 1676), daughter of the Revd Henry Pickering (1564–1637) of Aldwincle.
