John Flaxman Escultor e ilustrador inglés Nació el 6 de junio de 1755 en York (Inglaterra). Cursó estudios en la Royal Academy de Londres. Entre 1775 y 1787 realiza decoraciones en relieve, inspiradas en los modelos de las cerámicas griega y romana, para el ceramista Josiah Wedgwood.

John Flaxman RA was a British sculptor and draughtsman, and a leading figure in British and European Neoclassicism. Early in his career he worked as a modeller for Josiah Wedgwood's pottery. He spent several years in Rome, where he produced his first book illustrations. He was a prolific maker of funerary monuments.

John Flaxman's seven-year stay in Rome transformed him from an obscure British designer and sculptor into a major international figure with a proven record in monumental sculpture and decorative design. His outline engravings of 1793-5 illustrating Homer and Dante won him an international reputation unmatched by any contemporary British artist.
