John Ronald Reuel Tolkien CBE FRSL (/ ˈ r uː l ˈ t ɒ l k iː n /, ROOL TOL-keen; 3 January 1892 – 2 September 1973) was an English writer and philologist. He was the author of the high fantasy works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, conocido popularmente como J.R.R. Tolkien, nació el 3 de enero de 1892 en la ciudad de Bloemfontein, en el Estado Libre de Orange (actual Sudáfrica). Sus padres eran Arthur Reuel Tolkien y Mabel Suffield. Por una tradición familiar, el pequeño recibió el mismo nombre que el de su abuelo paterno, John.
