John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Hamilton (1540–1604) was the founder of the long line of the marquesses and dukes of Hamilton in Scotland. Birth and origins. John was born about 1540 in Scotland. [1] . He was the third son of James Hamilton and his wife Margaret Douglas. His father was the 2nd Earl of Arran and Duke of Châtellerault in France.

The third son of James Hamilton, 2nd earl of Arran, he was given the abbey of Arbroath in 1551.

Hamilton, John James (1756–1818), 9th earl and 1st marquess of Abercorn , politician, was born in July 1756 in London, posthumous son of Capt. John Hamilton (1715–56) and his wife Harriet, daughter of Sir James Craggs. He was educated at Harrow (1767–71), before entering (1773) Pembroke College, Cambridge, although he never graduated.
