John J. Crittenden (born Sept. 10, 1787, near Versailles, Ky., U.S.—died July 26, 1863, Frankfort, Ky.) was an American statesman best known for the so-called Crittenden Compromise (q.v.), his attempt to resolve sectional differences on the eve of the American Civil War.

The Crittenden Compromise was an unsuccessful proposal to permanently enshrine slavery in the United States Constitution, and thereby make it unconstitutional for future congresses to end slavery. It was introduced by United States Senator John J. Crittenden ( Constitutional Unionist of Kentucky ) on December 18, 1860.
John Jordan Crittenden was born in Woodford County in 1787. Called "one of Kentucky's great statesmen," he was governor of Kentucky, attorney general under three presidents, and was a United States senator five times. During the War of 1812, Crittenden was an aide to both General Samuel Hopkins and Governor Isaac Shelby.
