John Joseph Pershing nació el 13 de septiembre de 1860 en el condado de Laclede, Missouri, en el seno de una familia de comerciantes. John J. Pershing was born on a farm near Laclede, Missouri on 13 September 1860. He was the oldest of six children, three boys and three girls. He attended a school in Leclede considered exclusive for its time. Upon graduating, he became a teacher at a local African-American school called the Prairie Mound School.

John J. Pershing was born September 13, 1860, in Laclede Missouri to John Fletcher Pershing and Ann Elizabeth Thompson. He graduated from the United States Military Academy and was assigned to the 6th cavalry in 1886 and participated in campaigns in the Southwest and Northern Plains, including the Wounded Knee campaign.
