John James Ruskin was the son of an Edinburgh calico merchant. In 1818, he married his cousin Margaret, the daughter of a skipper in the herring fleet. They moved to London, where John James became a partner in the firm of sherry importers, Domecq, Telford and Ruskin.

John James's death in 1864 removed an essential prop from Ruskin's life. Margaret's death in 1871, by contrast, removed an impediment.
