John Jay died in New York in 1829 at the age of 83, but his legacy lives on. John Jay's long and eventful life, from 1745 to 1829, encompassed the movement for American independence and the creation of a new nation — both processes in which he played a full part. His achievements were many, varied and of key importance in the birth and early years of the fledgling nation.
John Jay was just 33 years old when in 1778, he became the president of the Second Continental Congress. Further, from 1779, he was a diplomat in Europe. Along with Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, he was responsible for negotiating the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which finally secured independence. From 1784, he was secretary for foreign affairs.
