Fue una de las principales figuras de la segunda generación de poetas románticos junto con Lord Byron y Percy Bysshe Shelley. Su fama creció tras su muerte, y a finales del siglo XIX, se había convertido en uno de los más queridos de todos los poetas ingleses.
